Whether you’re relaxing with friends, getting ready to go out, or just looking to try out your new cocktail making kit, the green tea shot is without a doubt one of the easiest and best cocktails to make. For quick pre-drinks or to finish the evening on a refreshing note, the green tea shot takes just a few minutes to make and it’s very easy to make up a whole tray load of shots in one go.

We just wish this green tea shot actually contained green tea! Not to worry, in this article you can find recipes for both the alcohol cocktail and some healthy real green tea shot alternatives.

What Is A Green Tea Shot

A green tea shot is a shot-sized cocktail made with Irish whiskey. It’s usually made with Jameson Irish whiskey, explaining why you might know it as the Jameson Green Tea.

Despite looking a bit like a green tea made with real tea leaves, this alcoholic drink doesn’t actually contain any tea. Or caffeine, for that matter. It was simply named a green tea shot as the bright colour is very similar to brewed green tea.

What it does contain is a lot of alcohol. It’s a great introductory cocktail to whiskey and often has a very peachy green tea flavour thanks to the peach schnapps and sweet & sour mixer. Topped up with lemonade or any citrus-flavoured soda, it’s naturally refreshing and best served ice cold.

It contains just 3 ingredients, all in equal measures, so you’ll be able to whip up a green tea shot in no time at all using the recipe below. It’s extremely easy to scale up or down for large parties!

Green Tea Shot Recipe

Making a green tea shot is very simple. To make it professional you’ll need a shaker to combine the ingredients and pour into the shot glasses, but you can make do by simply combining the ingredients directly in the shot glasses or using another container to shake the ingredients together.

Ingredients

  • 1 part Irish Whiskey (Jameson Irish Whiskey is a good one to use)
  • 1 part peach liqueur (Peach Schnapps is the usual choice)
  • 1 part sweet & sour mixer (you can find this easily at the supermarket)
  • A dash of lemonade or lemon and lime soda (any brand will do)
  • Ice

How to Make the Green Tea Shot

  1. Fill your shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Add your Irish Whiskey, Peach Schnapps and sweet & sour mixer in equal quantities to the shaker. Use one shot of each liquid to make 3 Green Tea Shots, for example.
  3. Shake vigorously to combine and cool the shot.
  4. Pour the shot into shot glasses or small beakers, holding back the ice. Top up with a little lemonade or lemon and lime soda.
  5. Sip to enjoy the flavour or knock it back as a shot!

Nutrition and Calories

This is a fairly strong cocktail. The Jameson Irish Whiskey is 40% ABV, which is pretty low for a whiskey. If you’re using a finer or aged whiskey, that could be as high as 70% ABV. The peach schnapps is only between 15% and 20% ABV.

Peach schnapps also contains approximately 63 calories per 25ml, from the 6g of sugar. Combined with the sugary lemonade or lemon and lime soda, and a green tea shot contains a lot of sugary sweetness!

Jameson Irish Whiskey has slightly more calories than the peach schnapps, but not from sugar.

If you’re looking for vitamins and healthy nutrients, you won’t find any in the alcoholic green tea shot.

Green Tea Shots Containing Real Green Tea

The most basic recipe for a quick green tea shot is to mix up green tea extract with water, then gulp it down as a shot. While that might be very healthy for you, it’s not going to taste very nice! So, here we’ve come up with a few alternative nice-tasting green tea shots actually containing green tea.

Matcha Green Tea Shot

Matcha, although very smooth and sometimes creamy, is usually a strong-tasting green tea. That makes it a perfect candidate for making into a green tea shot. You won’t have to increase the tea : water ratio higher than usual to get a strong-tasting shot!

To make one shot (approximately 45ml) of Matcha green tea, sift 2 scoops of Matcha powder into hot water. It’s best to use water that’s 80°C so as not to scald the green tea and make it bitter. Thoroughly whisk together the water and Matcha until you have a thick, frothy layer of bubbles. Enjoy your Matcha shot!

Iced Lemon Green Tea Shot

If you like the citrus notes of a real green tea shot but want to avoid the alcohol, you can easily make up a batch of iced lemon green tea the night before and leave it to cool in the fridge. The benefit of cold brewing tea is that you allow the leaves enough time to infuse strongly – but without the heat of boiling water, you’ll find it’s very smooth, low in acidity and hardly bitter at all.

For every 250ml (8oz) of room temperature water, add 2 teaspoons of green tea loose leaf. Use Chinese green tea for smooth, warm green tea or a Japanese green tea for a grassy, bright green tea. This will make enough for approximately 5 green tea shots.

Leave the water and tea leaf mix in the fridge for at least 12 hours. You can add slices of lemon a few hours before you’re going to serve it or add a few drops of lemon juice to each shot glass before adding the cold green tea.

You might want to dilute the iced green tea to taste with water or lemonade.

This is a great recipe for hot summer days.

Starbucks’ Peach Green Tea Lemonade Shots

If you’re a fan of Starbucks’ peach green tea lemonade, you’ll love this recipe we’ve come up with. It has the peachy flavour of an alcoholic green tea shot but is sweeter rather than slightly sour, without the mixer.

Use the recipe above to make a pitcher of iced green tea. Chinese green tea works best with the sweetness of peaches, rather than grassy Japanese green tea.

To add the peach flavour, you can simply dilute some peach squash/peach juice, or squeeze and strain fresh peaches.

To make one large cup (4 or 5 shots), combine:

  • ½ cup (125ml) of chilled green tea
  • A squeeze of lemon juice
  • ¼ cup (62ml) peach juice – increase to ½ if using fresh/weak tasting peach juice
  • ¼ cup of lemonade – increase this to make a lighter drink

Serve in shot glasses or top up with extra lemonade and a sweetener of your choice to make several light Starbucks-like peach green tea lemonades.

Super Sour Green Tea Shots

This makes for a great non-alcoholic party game, using different levels of sour mixer or citrus juice in each shot. Use clear juices so your friends can’t tell how sour each shot will be.

Wipe a lemon wedge over the rim of your shot glasses and press into lemon sherbet or sugar.

In several small pitchers, combine iced or hot green tea with different sour liquids. You can try different mixers, syrups or just use lemon and/or lime juice. Add a small amount at a time, tasting regularly until it reaches a good level of sourness, but is still drinkable. You can add lemonade if you want to dilute down the taste.

Carefully fill each shot glass, then arrange them randomly on a tray or table.

  • Vitamins B2, B3, magnesium and potassium… with only 1kcal per 100g!
  • 12mg of caffeine. In a cup of green tea there’s just enough caffeine to keep you alert without flaring up caffeine sensitivity.
  • Antioxidants that neutralise free radical damage, preventing cancer, heart disease and even the visual effects of aging.
  • Polyphenols, including catechin, that are naturally anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
  • Various amino acids, including L-theanine which is unique to green tea. It keeps you alert and awake with a calm focus.

Drinking a concentrated green tea shot may actually be healthier than drinking a normal cup of green tea. The longer the tea leaves sit in the water, the more of these nutrients, antioxidants and amino acids will infuse into your tea. So, a concentrated shot of green tea will have a higher nutritional value than a weakly brewed hot mug of green tea. Just bear in mind that the caffeine content will also increase the more concentrated your green tea shot is!

Not keen on real green tea in your drink but still want something different than the usual green tea shot cocktail? These 3 alternative recipes will be right up your street, giving a new take on the classic cocktail, some with alcohol and some without.

Green Tea Jello Shot

The best way we’ve found to make a green tea jello shot is with gelatine – although you can use green gummy bears, but they will alter the taste away from the classic green tea!

Dissolve the gelatine into a cup of boiling water, following the instructions on the packet. Mix in ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup Irish whiskey, ¼ cup concentrated peach juice and ¼ cup lemon and lime squash or cordial, with a few drops of fresh lemon or lime juice. Add a few drops of green food colouring too if you want the shots to look vibrant and green. Quickly pour into your shot glasses when the liquid is cool enough to handle, but not yet starting to set.

Place the shot glasses in the fridge to cool and set for at least 2 hours.

AriZona Green Tea Energy Shot

The Arizona green tea energy shot is a small 2oz bottle, containing as much caffeine as a 16oz cup of coffee! For a real AriZona green tea energy shot you’ll need to buy it directly from AriZona, or on online marketplaces like Amazon. Our favourite flavour is the classic green tea with ginseng and honey. While we can’t pack in a ton of caffeine at home, we can still make a sweet, refreshing green tea and honey shot relatively easily!

If you’re following a cold brew method, add the honey after the tea has infused and cooled. You’ll need to stir thoroughly so the honey is combined rather than sitting at the bottom. We find a whisk to be the best way to combine honey and tea.

Honey dissolves quickly in hot green tea, but it will taste stronger and sweeter when hot compared to iced, so use a little less honey, adjusting to taste.
